School Bus Safety

The most important mission for Student Transportation Services is the safety of every student who rides a school bus or activity bus.  In order to ensure each student has a safe ride, the student code of conduct applies to all students while at the bus stop, on the school bus or on any Berkeley County School District (BCSD) vehicle. Inappropriate behavior will be treated with the same level of scrutiny as inappropriate behavior in the classroom and will lead to appropriate school consequences in accordance with the Student Behavior Code and includes suspension from bus riding.  In addition to the Student Behavior Code, students must also follow the Safety Rules listed below.

School Bus Danger Zone

school bus danger zones

School buses are known to be the safest method of transporting kids to school—70 times safer than traveling by car. School bus design improvements and a variety of safety products and technologies all contribute to helping school buses maintain this distinction. Industry insight gathered on safety incidents involving school buses, however, shows that being outside of the bus, in the “Danger Zone,” poses the highest risk to children.

The Danger Zone is the space all around your school bus. It extends out 10ft-12ft. The school bus driver may not be able to see students in this zone. Please keep in mind the driver cannot see students around the wheels either. It is very dangerous to be in this area, please review the diagram for details.

Students must be very careful whenever you get on or off the bus. If something drops under the bus, leave it there. Let your school bus driver get it for you. Never cross behind the bus!!!!
