Military Families

Military Collage

Approximately 1,400 children of active-duty military families currently attend Berkeley County School District schools.

The District thanks those who have already entrusted BSCD schools with their children's education and warmly welcomes those who are new to our area.

Please contact the District's Office of Communications & Community Relations at (843) 899-8611 or the liaison listed below if we can answer any questions or provide assistance.

To address the unique educational and transitional needs specific to Military Families, there are several resources available.

** Active duty military families with current active duty orders to Joint Base Charleston residing anywhere in Berkeley County can choose to have their child attend Marrington Elementary and Marrington Middle School of the Arts, regardless of where their child is zoned. Marrington Elementary is located on the base of Naval Weapons Station, Joint Base Charleston.

School Liaisons address the unique educational needs specific to military families.  The SLS advocates for the educational needs of military children, and serves as a point of contact for military families seeking assistance with school related K-12 matters.  School Liaisons collaborate with the district, and the MSTC, to ensure educational transitions are seamless, and that resources are readily available for families and district personnel.

Military Family Life Counselors

The Department of Defense (DOD) authorized the funding for several full-time Military Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) to serve elementary schools, middle schools and one middle/high school in the tricounty area.

In Berkeley County School District, there are MFLCs at Marrington Elementary School, Marrington Middle School of the Arts and Cane Bay Elementary School.

School MFLCs offer short-term non-medical counseling services to military connected children, parents, faculty, and staff. The MFLC counselors are at the schools to help and are available to talk to military students, facilitate group activities, outreach to parents and to process interactions and concerns, such as:

  • Communication

  • Self-esteem/self-confidence

  • Resolving conflicts

  • Behavioral management techniques

  • Bullying

  • Helping children deal with angry feelings

  • Sibling/parental relationships

  • Deployment and reintegration issues

The MFLC program utilizes professional, licensed and credentialed counselors.
